Vasily J. Assikis, M.D.
Dr. Assikis was born in Greece. After receiving his Medical Degree from the Aristotelian University Medical School in Greece, he came to Chicago to do a two year fellowship at Northwestern University Medical School in the Breast Cancer Research Program. He was a resident and a Chief Resident at the Cook County Hospital for four years while also teaching at The Rush Medical College. Dr. Assikis then went to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston for a hematology-oncology fellowship where he also served as Chief Teaching Fellow. He is Board Certified in Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine.
In 2003 he joined the faculty of Emory University as a Distinguished Georgia Cancer Coalition Scholar and served as an Assistant Professor of Hematology/Oncology and Urology at the Winship Cancer Institute as well as the Director of the Prostate Cancer Translational Research program. He joined Peachtree Hematology–Oncology Consultants in 2006.
Dr. Assikis is the recipient of numerous honors and awards: 1997, Intern of the Year at Cook County Hospital, Department of Medicine, 2002 AACR Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Research Award, 2002 and 2003 American Society of Clinical Oncology Merit Award, 2002 Glaxo Smith Kline Award for Oncology Research and MD Anderson Cancer Center Trainee Recognition Award for Patient Oriented research. He has been lecturing extensively and has been awarded numerous visiting professorships. He is nationally known for his expertise in the management of Genitourinary malignancies. He is an accomplished author of over 40 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts and manuscripts in the areas of prostate and breast cancer. Since its inception he has served as the Chair of the Genitourinary Malignancies Committee for CCE (Cancer Clinics of Excellence).He is actively involved in research efforts focusing on improved therapies for various cancers and has served as the national Principal Investigator for two multi-center clinical trials he conceived. He sits on the Piedmont Hospital Institutional Review Board and serves as the Piedmont Hospital Principal Investigator for the Atlanta Regional Community Clinical Oncology Program. He is a member of the American Association of Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Urology Association and GASCO. He also serves as a Board Member on GACORE, a nonprofit organization aiming to improve the quality of cancer care in Georgia by strengthening clinical cancer research.
Dr. Assikis is married with two children. He enjoys reading, travel, and spending time with his children, including coaching Little League soccer.
